W. Scott Miles | Roxie Ray | Susan Petty

Roxie Ray, Susan Petty, and W. Scott Miles present their individual representations of the theme of “Elements” in this exhibition of paintings and video installations that explore the intersections of visual abstraction and multimedia explorations. The theme of “elements” flows through these works, connecting three diverse artistic visions.

Scott Miles believes that we are all bound by the confines of time and space, but an artist can break those confines to present a new vision. He uses this idea to manipulate time and space through slow-motion video and macro-imaging to challenge the viewers’ perceptions and relationships with the world around them.

His video installation piece, Tension | Release, presents a slow-motion video visual with a music track by Another Electronic Musician. The video projection is coupled with a reflecting pool to provide a visual experience of contrasting time scales. The piece uses close-up water imagery that serves as a metaphor for the cycle of building and releasing tension and stress that is part of the human condition in today’s society.

A second video installation, Immersion, continues to break spatial and temporal scale to challenge the viewer’s sense of size and place in a transformative environment.

I leverage technology to present experiential video installations that could not have been created without advanced imaging systems. My work explores the connections between the media, the process, the message and the viewer’s experience. In Tension | Release, a slow-motion video uses water as a metaphor for cycles of tension and release, and their effect on our lives. The video is reflected into a 4-foot by 8-foot water pool that combines the slow-motion video with real-time water drips.

A second video installation, Immersion, continues to challenge the viewer’s perceptions of time, scale and place.

Roxie Ray

My intention beyond the elements of shapes, textures, colors, and line is to evoke an emotional response in me. The ultimate aim is to find my truth and what motivates in my discovery process are water and Farm Workers. My sanctuary is water and where I most feel alive. The Farm Workers vocalize my generational and inherited feelings of being autonomous and marginalized. Two totally different subjects that are elemental parts of me.

The impetus for my work in this exhibit is focused on the the paradox of images which are at once both simple and complex. The patterns of simple subjects, the glimmer of water, or the surface of tree bark rendered in complex detail. I will be working in three mediums, oil, graphite and watercolor.
